Environmental Responsibility

Our goal is to be a model environmentally sustainable and socially responsible company. Tactics sells gear to be used outside and when we’re not in the shop, we’re out surfing a local Oregon break, skating the streets of Eugene, or trekking through the backcountry in search of unspoiled powder. Other times the journey starts in the easy chair for the mechanical ride up Bachelor, Willamette, Hoodoo, Hood, or maybe Whistler or Baker if we can get away. Whatever the trip, the experience is one in which we seek fresh air and a connection to the elements one can never get inside a building. We believe that this privilege carries an obligation to help ensure that our children share the same experience. We also believe that it is important to help those less fortunate gain access to the outdoor locations so many of us take for granted.

Unfortunately, the reality check in selling cool gear is that almost everything we sell pollutes and in some way contributes to the destruction of our natural environment. Depressing as this may be, the answer is not to give up. For us, that means constantly searching for manufacturers who are working to be socially and environmentally responsible, and who will make gear that will last as long as possible. It also means little things like the fact that your order may arrive in a box that has survived prior missions. If it does, we hope you will take some pride in knowing that your order with Tactics contributed to our constant effort to consume the smallest amount of natural resources possible.

Most of the earth’s natural systems and biodiversity are in a steady state of decline. Solutions to our environmental crisis must be multi-faceted and driven not only by a change in our personal choices and habits, but also by a shift in our economy and the underlying businesses that are the engine of our economic systems. Sustainability is the key concept that needs to become the heart of the relationship between the consumer and businesses. We care about what the world will look like seven generations from now. We hope to encourage sustainability in the broadest sense and seek to operate our business in a sustainable manner.

What does it mean? Every year, Tactics gives 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. In the words of David Brower, we believe “There is no business to be done on a dead planet.”

1% For The Planet is an alliance of businesses that understand the necessity of protecting the natural environment and are committed to leveraging their resources to create a healthier planet. They understand that profit and loss are directly linked to the health of our environment. In addition, these businesses are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of industry.

If you’re a business owner (or have any influence over your boss) please consider becoming a member of this socially and environmentally progressive group. By contributing 1% of net annual sales to grassroots enviro groups, members of 1% For The Planet affect real change. And members receive other benefits: The satisfaction of paving the way for more corporate responsibility in the business community and the recognition, support, and patronage of conscientious consumers who value serious commitment to the environment.
